The Atropurpureum Maple is a beautiful purple grafted Japanese maple which offers you a lush dark purple and red colour in spring and summer, then going into brilliant red, bronze colours in autumn.
A small, deciduous tree, these are grafted purple maples, which means they will never get much taller than the height of the trunk when you buy them. Instead, their trunks thicken and their heads grow full with delicate ‘drooping’ branches.
Grafted purple Japanese maples, like the Atropurpureum variety, are absolutely perfect for small gardens and can even be grown in large pots. For this reason, buying a Purple Japanese Maple is like buying a gorgeous jumbo side bonsai tree. The Purple Maple is best placed in a position of full sunlight or partial shade and in moist but well drained soils.
