Chris’ Tips:

  • Remember, your agave plants appreciate a sunny vista! They really do thrive best in full sunlight so place them somewhere they’ll get at least half day sun;
  • As far as watering, less is more! The agave is built to stand up to desert conditions, so you can relax and water your agave 2-3 times per month in the summer season, and once per month or two in the cooler months;
  • If your agave plant is indoors, be sure to wipe down the leaves every so often as they can get covered in dust and it can eventually affect health of the plant;
  • Agaves don’t need to be pruned, but old leaves can be removed at the base of the trunk if required;
  • Be sure to plant your agave plant in a spot where it won’t be brushed past people or vehicles. Some agave are spiky and can hurt, whereas others, like the agave attenuata, have strong, broad leaves. If these leaves break or a piece snaps, they won’t grow back in that spot, leaving unsightly damage on your garden feature;
    If this happens, trim the leaf with scissors or sharp secateurs and reshape the leaf.
