Eruca Sativa, Garden Rocket
Salad Rocket is an annual plant native to the Mediterranean region. A longer leafed, open salad green, rocket is rich in Vitamin C and Potassium. Grown since the Roman times as an edible herb, rocket was considered to be an aphrodisiac. Because of its reputation, rocket was often mixed with lettuce, which had an opposite, calming effect. In the Middle Ages rocket was forbidden in monasteries. Today, rocket is enjoyed innocently, and mixed in salads, it adds a nice peppery flavour. Rocket is also used today as a garnish on pasta dishes, on pizzas, in soups and stews, and even on potatoes.
Salad rocket love a sunny position in well drained soil. Well established, happy plants in frost free, favourable conditions, can grow up to 1m tall. They produce little creamy white flowers, which are also edible.
