Agapanthus
- Perfect garden and edge filler
- Fast-growing with lush, dense foliage
- Variety of colours and sizes
Some parts of the garden are really tricky to fill. It’s either too dry, too shady or too hot and sometimes the soil is just awful quality. Luckily there is one super plant that can easily grow in all these situations and barely needs any maintenance!
The Agapanthus is a strong, resilient low to a medium growing shrub that produces clusters of bell-shaped flowers on tall stems. The foliage is a rich glossy green and grows into a nice, neat and dense habit.
The original Agapanthus, now named Tall Agapanthus, grows to 1.5m high and approximately 1m wide, making it a rather large garden feature. However, due to the popularity of the Agapanthus, many new varieties have come onto the market, making an Agapanthus for every spot and colour preference!
What makes Agapanthus so preferential, other than their ability to grow in any spot, is how they instantly make an otherwise unsightly space look lush and green.
You will often spot Agapanthus along narrow spaces (as small as 15cm wide!), down hot and gravelly driveways, in urban or high pedestrian traffic areas or in exposed pots and planters. No matter the situation, your Agapanthus will thrive!

For the best results for your Agapanthus, plant in a part shade to full sun position and water regularly in summer. They will benefit from a feed of fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.
Now that you have learned how easy an Agapanthus is to grow, here is a word of warning. Do not plant your Agapanthus in a garden bed where it can take over other, slower growing plants that you love. Being the fast growing, hardy super plant that it is, Agapanthus can quickly smother out other plants, unless you choose one of the dwarf varieties, of which there are many. Otherwise, it’s best to keep your Agapanthus in areas all to their own, which can often be better as they look marvellous grown in large clusters and strips.
